Aida fabric is the typical go to for cross stitch fabric. 14 and 18 Ct are the most popular. For a more full coverage, I would suggest 18Ct. Zweigart brand is the best overall for quality.

6 stranded embroidery floss. For 18 count, you will use two strands. For 14 count, you will use three strands. DMC brand tends to be the most popular.
